Big Momma & Big Daddy
To Know Your Past Is to Understand Your Present And to Change The Future
"....But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15)
Big Daddy and Big Momma, small in stature but mammoth in "heart" were the molders of the Singleton Family. These two wonderful people were the pillars of our family and of the community. Big Daddy and Big Momma taught us by example, old fashioned values, the likes of which are seldom seen today. The values they instilled in us formed the firm foundation that has governed this family and made it a "Family" in every sense of the word.
Edward "Fudd' Singleton was born on Capers Island, South Carolina, a son of Robert Singleton and Annie Singleton, August 12, 1892. His family moved to "higher ground" Ten Mile, as the result of a 1893 storm. He attended Charleston County public school. He worked at the Charleston Naval Yard and was a farmer (cotton and corn).
In the Ten Mile community, Big Daddy was considered a pioneer religious leader. He was a member of the Greater Zion A.M.E Church where the entire membership referred to him as "Leader Fudd". He served as a steward; leader of prayer service; founder of the Christian Band of Love Society; visited the sick members, and was a missionary. His name was on the cornerstone of two of Greater Zion Church buildings. Big Daddy was honored on many occasions for his work and dedication. Greater Zion A.M.E church family named the Goodwater-Singleton Multi-Purpose building in his honor.
Annie Gillard Singleton, daughter of Israel Gillard and Binkie Ann Thompson Gillard was born December 12,1898 at Luriel Hill, a section of the Phillip Community, South Carolina. Upon the death of her mother, she went to live with her sister, later an aunt in Ten Mile, Awendaw, South Carolina. This is where she met Edward "Fudd" Singleton. Later on in life, she married Edward. They were married for 74 years. Ten blessed children came from this union. "Blossie", better know by this name, was a devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker. She loved gardening (canned her vegetables and supplied her children and neighbors) and quilting which she gave each child a quilt at his/her marriage. She also shared her talent with her neighbors. She was a former member of Greater Goodwill A.M.E church. She was a member of Greater Zion Church, where she was a member of Class 13, the Senior Missionary Society, the Sisterhood Society, and the Praying Band Club.
Big Daddy's and Big Momma's lives were ones that we could look up to. We need to remember how much we have been influenced by and how we have benefited from the teachings of Big Daddy and Big Momma.
